2009This contemporary adaptation of the traditional South Indian tile-roofed dwelling is one of DAC ’s most recognized architectural projects in Calicut.
Sahar is situated in Nadakkavu, Calicut with a facade that shifts from the conventionality of tile-roofed residences by using different roof levels and using a concrete sloped roof (that also functions as sun-shades), flaunting truss work detail and adding to the effect of the elevation. The front elevation was made interesting to suit the requirements of the client. The highest point in the volume is balanced by the low roof of the ‘Poomukham’ i.e front verandah, rooting the built form to the ground level. The ‘Poomukham’ is flanked by a water body below, over which one enters the residence.
Modern interiors pave the way for comfortable living of the clients. The corner windows are another interesting feature of Sahar, lending residents a 180 degree perspective of the exterior surroundings, which have been landscaped to perfection. The driveway is finished in unpolished Kota stone, to preserve the rustic ambiance of this modern residence inspired by Kerala ’s traditional dwellings.
